Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

The Story:

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake “Star Wars: A New Hope” into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

SWU has been featured in documentaries, news features and conferences around the world for its unique appeal. In 2010 we won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media.

We can't thank everyone enough for making this such a special project.

This demo was made at Mozilla's Media Freedom & the Web seminar in London in November 2011. We call it an "Augumentary" because of it's ability to augment traditional documentary storytelling. We wanted to find a way to use html5 and popcorn.js to fill a video with relevant links without distracting you from the way you normally watch films.

This Augumentary demo is for the upcoming documentary film TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard directed by Simon Klose.

"Portrait of the Ghost Drummer"

Ghost Drummer is a multidisciplinary project that explores graphic qualities in process of playing on a drum kit. Besides being a musician, drummer when playing is unconsciously engaged in an elaborate choreography. The drum sticks are the extensions of drummer's hands like a brush is an extension of the painter's hand. Motion-captured movements become a visual map over a time revealing fragile rhythm structures and invisible notations behind energetic instrumental solo. 'Portrait of a Ghost Drummer' expands the understanding of drummers activity from purely auditory experience to spontaneous visual performance. From technical point of view motion trajectory was captured on Vicon MX system and raw CSV files were translated into visual language in 3d environment Cinema4D. My self-developed technique is inspired by areas such as drumming notation, action painting, choreography, japanese calligraphy and 3d digital drawing. Most important for me is that it gives me true feeling that I am my drawing.

"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

Chaotic Moon Labs' "Board of Awesomeness" is intended as a technology teaser to show how perceptive computing can turn around the way we look at user experiences. The project utilizes a Microsoft Kinect device, Samsung Windows 8 tablet, a motorized longboard, and some standard and custom hardware to create a longboard that watches the user to determine what to do rather than have the operator use a wired or wireless controller. The project uses video recognition, speech recognition, localization data, accelerometer data, and other factors to determine what the user wants to do and allows the board to follow the operators commands without additional aid.

The expression "Alte Schwede" (old swede) has it's origin from the end of the 30 year war when Friedrich Wilhelm hired experienced swedish lego-soldiers to train his army. Since these older soldiers were particurlary good in drilling exercises this friendly expression was born.

A minimal audiovisual sculpture of sound and imagined ink exploring Supercollider generative sound algorithms. The author is grateful to Alberto de Campo, Julian Rohrhuber and James McCartney for the inspiration on some Supercollider algorithms examples.
Major noise sounds were recorded in a custom made software, developed in Processing, using an EEG interface, doing brain signal analytics, http://projects.jmartinho.net/225970/Brain-in-digital-Art, expect the piano, witch was recorded live. The processing program was connected to Super Collider via OSC protocol.

About the author:
João Martinho Moura is a Portugese Interactive Media Artist. His interests are focused on intelligent interfaces, digital art, digital music and computational aesthetics. The past year I have spent a lot of time in my SEO (Search Engine Optimization) effort, using the free tools and free reports covering this field from the good people at HubSpot. Now it seems to pay off and I have started to rank on the first page (usually position 5-6 on the first page, even though the results is not always consistant) in Google results for super popular search strings such as "fashion photographer".
Ranking on the first page and ultimately in the top spots 1-3, for this particular search string is rewarded by up to 210 000 potential visits/month compared to for example 400 visits for more "long tail" keywords such as "contemporary fashion photographer" which on the other hand might result in more relevant visits.
Now HubSpot has modernized and re-named one of their tools...

"l'Amour Fou" is on the surface, a documentary about the relationship between Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berger, his lover and business partner, set against the background of the "Sale of the Century" when Pierre Berger, after the death of YSL auctioned of their enormous art collection, donating the proceeds to their aids-charity.
On another level it's about the power of letting go and moving on...

Similar, documenting the last days of ruling his empire before retirement, "The Last Emperor" is a very funny and ironic piece on another fashion icon, Valentino. This movie is also set against the lifelong, complicated business-emotional relationship between Valentino and his life partner Giametti.

If You're looking for outstanding creative projects that specifically makes use of new and cutting edge technology the CreatorsProject is an definitive go-to destination. Their lively blog is posting 3-5 posts a day with irreverent and fun stuff and there are longer and more substantial articles and videos from some absolutely word class creatives.

In another example of the changing role of networks the creative network Glossom has emerged from being just a creative network where people upload their content and interact with each others, to becoming a full fledged creative agency and content curator, publishing select projects on their various blogs and publications...

YouTube and Ridley Scott produced "Life in a day" which premiered in Jan 2011. This massively crowd-sourced project which simply documents July 24th. 2010 is another example of this trend... I also have had personal contact with platforms and networks which are planning "add-ons" such as some sort of vertical agency which will produce content, drawing contacts and content from the vast pool of talent they already have ...

So on one hand we have this massively, huge, mega-trend of more and more uploads and production of content by "empowered individual" and on the other a micro-trend of cleaning-up, quality control, and curating content to create other models and possibly revenue sources...

"Bosco Verticale is Italian for “Vertical Forest.” The project took inspiration from traditional Italian towers covered in ivy. Boeri has simply multiplied the amount of foliage to a dramatic degree, envisioning residential buildings that resemble tall boxy trees. Each apartment unit has a balcony attached, with a lush garden enveloping the structure. The two towers will provide roots for 900 trees, as well as plenty of shrubbery and other floral vegetation. Their footprint, when flattened, is equal to 10,000 square meters of forest. Bosco Verticale provides a plan to make reforestation possible within the confines of a developed city."

1. Share Lots of Photos

Photos are very important on Google+. A quick look at a Google+ feed will tell you that lots of individual images are shared by users. This is slightly different from Facebook, where users might upload an entire album of images at one time. Think about your business and marketing visually. Which images, charts, or slides can you share on Google+ to ignite conversations and increase the viral spread of your content? Google+ is built for sharing images, so take advantage of it.

2. Add Recommended Links

Under the ‘About’ tab of your Google+ Page, you have the option to add recommended links in the right side bar. Don’t let this space go to waste. Instead, add links to important blog articles and lead generation offers to drive more traffic and leads for your business.

3. Promote Your Google+ Page on Your Blog and Website

To get real business value from Google+, you have to have a community of people there to consume and engage with your content. In order to get people to add your Google+ Page to their Circles, you need to promote the page in places where you are already attracting visitors, such as your homepage, blog side bar, or other social media accounts. Cross-promotion is key to building a strong Google+ community.

4. Encourage People to Share Your Posts

Sharing on Google+ is a catalyst for increasing the virality of your content. When you post a message, photo, or link on Google+, be sure to ask your subscribers to share your content with the people in their Circles. This is similar to asking people to “please retweet” on Twitter.

5. Analyze Traffic and Leads From Google+

So is this Google+ thing actually working for your business? To determine this, you’ll need to look at the traffic and leads that have been driven from Google+. You can do this by looking at referral traffic from plus.Google.com to your website, or if you are a HubSpot customer, HubSpot will segment all traffic, leads, and customers from Google+ for you as part of our marketing analytics.

I would like to hang out with your small group and talk about what technology wants.

Last year to promote the launch of my book What Technology Wants, I offered to appear at your place of work in the month of January and give a one hour talk if your group would purchase 25 copies of the book. This arrangement was a rousing success, not the least because I had the opportunity to visit so many organizations I would not have otherwise met. The diversity and quality of the groups that I met with was amazing, and matched by the quality of the conversations we had. I think it worked out well for everyone. The only downside to the whole month was that I had to restrict the offer to the San Francisco Bay Area. Many groups outside CA, and outside the US were left out.

Now, to promote and discuss the new Penguin paperback publication of What Technology Wants, I have a related offer good for anywhere in the world. For seven days next month I will be hosting a series of small, 1.5-hour Google+ Hangouts with any group that purchases 9 paperback copies of my book. Each Hangout will be limited to 10 participants, which is Google's current cap on participants. A Google Hangout is like a Skype session but with 10 people, in ten windows on your screen. For 90 minutes I will discuss what technology wants and anything else the group wants to talk about. On a more sober note, I'm extremely curious to see how this new Google initiative will play out for brands. As a photographer I'm sure there will be tons of opportunities since g+ is full of us already.

On Facebook, the main reason for me to add a page was the fact that "fans"could add themselves without having to be "friends" which made for a more open culture for FB pages. Since G+ circles functions different I'm not completely sure if the difference between a G+ page or profile is that big ?

Buffer is a small app that automatically lets You schedule Your Tweets so they reach the biggest audience and subsequently gets You more followers. Now, a big follower count is not the main goal here, Quality of follower is much more important, (but there is nothing wrong with having a big following... )
After using Buffer for about a week and scheduling my tweets for 4 pm. 6 pm. and 10 pm. using services like Crowdbooster, Tweriod to pinpoint the hotspots when I should post to various networks, my twitter follower graph looked like this...

.. now this is pretty powerful and just last night I played around with it dropping a few images of mine into Google Image Search and at the 5th. image I came across a website that was using one of my images without my consent. !
Now, I'm not chasing after teenage bloggers who use my images in fan blogs about actors but I'm going after rather well-established professional websites and blogs who clearly are run by journalists who should know better.
I have been posting on the this theme earlier clearly expressing my thoughts that the value of having Your images shared and spread is clearly bigger than a relatively small fee, but only if there is a credit with a back-link...

For the past 2-3 years I have become increasingly interested in the business behind fashion and photography and especially the branding and marketing aspects of anything pop-cultural. I wanted to know more about building brands and how to communicate my story and there are obviously an enormous amount of information on this to go through. Pretty early I came across the distinction Inbound vs. Outbound marketing and became very intrigued by the possibilities that the new inbound mindset offers someone interested in taking control over their own brand. By thinking more like a publisher and content creator we have the opportunity to forge deeper and longer lasting relationships with fans and potential clients.
SEO, or search engine optimization is a real cornerstone in the inbound marketers tool arsenal and I tried to implement what I could. A big part of my learning experience came via two excellent sources PhotoShelter (which is very photographer centric) and the more marketer oriented HubSpot, both of who constantly publish a plethora of free articles on various subjects relevant to inbound marketing and I can really recommend both of them if You're interested in learning more...

Just today I noticed that for the first time I have started to rank on Google's 1st. page for a much more general, and therefore more difficult to rank for, search string, fashion photographer (as opposed to the more Long Tail keywords that I had targeted earlier, such as contemporary fashion photographer. )

The importance of this is clearly understood when You use Google's free KeywordTool to take a peak into the numbers...

The single most important factor to rank well in searches is inbound links, which You earn by producing relevant and useful content that people reward by giving their thumbs-up in the form of a link back to Your site.

// Artist Statement
The work folds for the Lindenau Museum (Altenburg, Germany) may be understood as a rapprochement with the history of the museum’s collection of plaster casts. I was particularly interested in the ancient, fragmented bodies – how through the loss of limbs they became almost abstract, fragmentary sculptures and yet still disclosed a nearly uncanny vitality. Also noteworthy is that the collection entails sculptures, Greek in origin, that have been replicated time and time again. Hewn from marble and partially painted in color, the originals were repeatedly copied in marble or plaster in different places across centuries, despoiled of color and slurred in detail.

Despite these multiple re-shapings that attend the loss of the original’s memory, new meanings and frictions arise with each copy in each respective present. They are the precondition for over 2400 years of the ongoing revitalization of the legacy of antiquity. The fold, a continually recurring visual and conceptual motif in my works, is for me the pictorial metaphor for these layers and distortions of meaning. In the projection the fold becomes connected to the fragmentary sculptures, swirls around them, makes them flow with bygone colors, protects or clothes them, gives them peace and lets them come alive for a moment, in order then to be stored as a further layer in the sediment of oblivion.

For a long time now I have been intrigued by the work of Studio Total and their work in communication, PR and advertising and especially their unconventional and highly successful methods using viral marketing and/or guerilla campaigns. Recently I had the privilege to be skyping with Per Eriksson from Studio Total on the realities of the New Media and I asked him do tell me more about their work.

“We don´t see ourselves as a typical advertising, or typical PR agency or even Marketing bureau for that matter. In fact we quite enjoy or somewhat diffuse position on this playing field, which gives us great freedom to do pretty much what we want”

“We as an agency are constantly trying to find out what we actually are, and we´re therefore constantly re-defining what we are. One of our main realizations and strong points is that we have truly understood, and acted upon, the fact that a lot of traditional advertising is a massive waste of the clients resources. There are countless of “non-traditional” ways of getting Your message across which have proven to be more effective (and more fun) and we tend to explore those avenues. I guess the keyword here is “effectivness” We see ourselves and our solutions as being very, very effective”

I came across Per and Studio Total through the very popular blog Black Ascot which shot to prominence and controversy in Sweden in just 4 short months and with just 100 posts managed to illuminate the creativeness, confusion and general “anything goes” attitude in todays freenzied new media landscape. Not so very long ago it was reaveled that the blog, chronicling the life of an orphaned teenager, Erika, living in the Stockholm equivalent of Upper-East Side, in an apartment with “750 dresses and doing my best to drink/shop my brains out” was in fact an advertising campaign for the Malmö Opera’s production “Vanessa” seeking to “expand their audience beyond the obvious core loyalists”
The blog with it’s hedonistic and sometimes very dark streaks, featured “Erika”, a privileged Stockholm teenager doing what a lot of young, urban women do... Postings of “todays outfit”, documenting sloppy kissing and casual sex and hang-overs, mixed with images of white lilies and the descriptions of the smell of certain perfumes... Other posts deals with popular drugs, what wine tastes best with semen, (Trimbach Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles) and references to certain boyfriends new Dior Hommes pants. Name-, and labeldropping on a very high level with that sort of expertise that only a certain media/pop-cultural/Stockholm elite possesses. All of it done with an absolute deadpan arrogance and delicious morbidity...

“Erika”, quickly developed a cult following with her observations and musings on fashion, sex, upper-class life and death, (sex, drugs & rock´n roll) and for me being a visual person I was jeaulously realizing the power of a text well written. Some of the comments reaveled a deep connection with this character, firmly in place on the dark side... Reading the comments I couldn´t help fantazicing that maybe some of them actually come from the writer’s team responsible for the blog, they were just to perfectly, lazily lingering over sensual details like the type of silk best used while masturbating. ... or languidly examining dildos in a sexshop.
Per, on the cult following Erika attracted (Erika Ascot has at present 1601 Facebook friends) and the unusual intense relationship she spawned:

“One of my favourite blog comments from a reader was “ I don’t care that You’re not real ! I still want to have sex with You”

Once it was revealed that this was not a “real” blog some readers felt cheated that Erika was “just an” invention by a “lowly” PR agency. The teenage-angst ridden content had obviously put a hook in a lot of readers and some of them felt “betrayed” I assume. Fuming, moralistic “You cannot do this” type comments where mixed in with glowing “Thank You´s” I found it very interesting thing to see how readers struggled to make sense of something they couldn’t quite understand... OK, You know an ad when You se one and we all have gotten fed up by the endless ad´s on TV, but a blog ?

Erika, perfectly well aware of it, stuck her neck out, especially in Sweden with it’s political correctness and wall-to-wall-carpeted uniformity, with posts like:
“The european nobility. Seems nowdays everyone wants to join our little club. Some guidelines: spend at least one fifth of each year in a place beginning with “St” (At Anton, St Tropez) and if you are vomiting from panicanxiety, do it in matching underwear.”

Of course this wouldn’t go un-noticed. ...or how about this one:
“Two new years resolutions. Stop fucking people in Acqua Di Parma and start blogging”

Consulting a prime example of this new (media) world order, Wikipedia on Viral Marketing, You get this definition:
“...viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet.[1] Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable. The goal of marketers interested in creating successful viral marketing programs is to identify individuals with high Social Networking Potential (SNP) and create Viral Messages that appeal to this segment of the population and have a high probability of being taken by another competitor.”

Now, viral marketing is nothing new, actually quite the contrary. Your basic Ponzi- and Pyramid schemes are very early examples of viral phenomenon where “a message” is spread from user to user, just like a viral infection. Super con-man Bernie Maddoff relied on this word of mouth effect to expand his rooster of seemingly happy investors... Some more recent pop-cultural examples are the marketing of The Blair Witch Project or the launching of email giant Hotmail. ... or just take hugely popular CraigsList which managed to spread solely on the basis of word of mouth. What is new is the enormous power and potential in using all the new social media such as the obvious ones: YouTube, Facebook or LinkedIn, to more specialized, “less open/more focused” networks such as Vimeo (if Your into moving image / video) or Glossom “a social network for fashion style and creativity”, and to use these networks to virally spread the word.

Curtis Silver wrote this in Wired Magazine:
“The power of influence is ever present in this discussion, which is what social media tools add to viral marketing. The crowd mentality is heavier within a social-media community, which makes it easier for viral marketing to do its job. Honestly, it seems like marketing through social media is the new form of viral marketing. That’s the wave of the future in marketing, a new and improved marketing platform.”

Another successful campaign by Studio Total was the highly controversial launch of a new political party, Kulturpartiet ( The Cultural Party.) Announced at the annual political show-off and spectacle , Almedals veckan, where the absolute politico - cultural - media elite grandstand and network, the press conference headed by some of the swedish cultural heavy-weights, who with absolute perfect pokerfaces deadpanned into the TV lights that they intended to run for seats in parlament on a one-issue-campaign of more money for culture ! For a few intense days the speculations and media pressure was enormous until it was revealed that this again was an effort by Studio Total to gain some publicity for Riksteatern.

At some point in a viral campaign the creators need to accept that they give up control of the message and let it live it’s own life, changing and going through “mutations” as it’s being passed on word-of-mouth, or through the social media networks. This is a radical difference to a more conventional campaign where everything is researched in minute detail with focus groups, test panels and what have You...

Now, it may seem like the successful Viral Campaigns are created by a bunch of guys just goofing around, coming up with funny and outragous things that gets taped and uploaded on YouTube and subsequently passed around and at some stage reaching a tipping point but some rules seem to exist and there seems to be a method to the madness and anarchy:
When You talk about anything Viral it’s easy to get the impression that it’s a little bit like the Wild West ! I mean like “anything goes” and creatives relying on their gut feeling to put strategies together. Or are there theories, procedures or protocols to follow ? How do You see this ?

To get the media attention in order to get people to talk about your brand it’s difficult to rely on theories. We’ll have to rely on our sense for what catches peopels interest.
The structure of stories is in one sense theoretical as constructed in classic litteratur and film and that might work as a theory that we could apply. We use basic story elements as finding an enemy, moving things around in order to create something new or not trying to blend in by looking good. Since we cannot predict exactly what part of our campanigns that will be retold we need to keep them simple. People aren’t stupid, if you interup them with a story that isn’t relevant or clearly speculative you will not get the viral effect. Anything goes applys better for traditional advertising where you don’t have to earn the attention.

Any thought comments on this ?

We haven’t experienced problems with messages that mutates in a bad way. If you think of your campaign as a headline in a newspaper, for example as our iPod speaker for Brothers - the WOS, the headlines was “The worlds most powerful iPod dock” and this whas what people told each other and our client Brothers was there in the background as the manufacurer of WOS. In general we launch our campaigns in many different channels at the same time and this probably help to keep the campaigns together. In combinatin with a simple story I don’t see the risk of bad mutations as a problem when working viral. You’ll just have to accept that when using people for getting your story out it will be re-told in slightly different ways, but a simple story will keep on course.

... on the same thread about losing control. Are You guys more about a “Happy Creative Chaos” or is it more a disciplined war-like campaign effort with flow charts etc etc ?

We’re not flow-charts guys, thats for sure. Not to say that there’s chaos in the office but a certain amount of impovisation is needed when launching our campaigns.

There seems to exist some rules to viral marketing like:
A successful viral campaign...
...gives away products or services, (Free)
...provides for effortless transfer to others, (the digital / mobile lifestyle)
...scales easily from small to very large
...exploits common motivations and behaviors,
...utilizes existing communication networks, (Social Media)
...takes advantage of others’ resources, (Let the consumer / prosumer do the heavy lifting)

Do You follow these rules, or is it done by gut feeling ?

Of course the precence of social media helps certain campaigns to evolve. The rules above might descibe parts of a succesfull viral campaign but it will not necessarily help you create one. In order to fulfill all the rules above you’ll have to start out with something that’s worth telling. Once you’ve got this you can utiliza social media and other means to get the story out. Focus on what matters, the story.

Please tell me more about the concept of, the strategy of, and the actual release of KULTURPARTIET ?
Have seen the press conference tapes and the chaos and pandemonium is total... Fun or scary ?

Haha, a bit of both I must say. The mission was to help The Swedish National Theatre (Sweden’s largest theatre, with a turnover of more than 40 million euros) to get the cultural issus on the political agenda. Theatres need public funding. How could we show the importance of culture to politicians?
The conclution was that everyone wants to get attention from politicians. So why not become politicians? We put together our own political party and baptised it “The Cultural Party” and invited famous writers, actors and musicians as spokespersons. Our fake party was featured as headline news in TV, radio and newspapers. A newspaper poll indicated that 16% of the population would vote for the party. After revealing the party was only an advertising hoax the chairmen of all the political parties liked the campaign (easy to say when the threat was gone). As a secondary effect the theatre experienced a 10% increase in ticket sales that summer.

I really don't know very much about this team other than that they seem to be Brazilian, which doesn't come as a surprise for me since Brazil and brazilian creatives keeps popping up all the time in conversations I have with other people in the business.
The creative network Glossom recently highlighted brazilian creatives and marketers are beginning to see Brazil, which is the worlds 5th. largest economy, as a shaper of style and ideas.

Apple has just released iCloud that lets You sync Your iPad, iPhone and Mac automatically and wirelessly. I updated my OS to OSX 10.7.2 and entered my Apple ID and voila, there it was...

Above, two examples of how QR codes are finding their way into the mainstream, admittedly at the opposite ends of the spectrum. One code is clearly home-made and simply stenciled onto the pavement whereas the other one is corporate and commercial.
